RV Solar & Power for Boondocking in Arizona
Arizona's sunny winters are great for solar. The right setup depends on how much power you use, so start by adding up your daily watt-hours (lights, fans, fridge, devices, CPAP, etc.).
The main parts
- Solar panels: roof-mounted or portable "suitcase" panels you can aim at the sun and park in shade.
- Charge controller: regulates charging. MPPT controllers are more efficient than PWM.
- Batteries: lithium (LiFePO4) batteries can use more of their capacity and weigh less than lead-acid, but cost more up front. Check that your charger and converter support lithium.
- Inverter: turns DC into AC for household outlets. Pure sine wave is safest for electronics.
- Portable power stations: all-in-one units that plug in and work, which are simpler for small loads.
Generators
A generator backs you up on cloudy days or when you need air conditioning. Follow posted quiet hours and use a CO detector.
Safety
Use properly sized wire and fuses. If you're not comfortable with DC wiring, have it installed professionally.
